This unit is equipped with a photoelectric sensor to provide early warning of fire danger: it is designed to sound the alarm at the presence of smoke, which in many home fires appears well in advance of the outbreak of widespread fire. You receive a loud 85 dB warning that a smoke hazard is present. 

Carbon monoxide is an invisible gas and a silent killer: most victims of CO poisoning die in their sleep. The unit emits a distinctive but equally piercing alarm to warn that dangerous levels of CO are present in your home.
